Whenever a prominent awards ceremony draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.
A fellow writer has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason movie academies avoid this approach. But it is an essential concession in the world of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards currently feature classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for numerous titles.
Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to accommodate them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
- A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
- Popular arranging title got ignored in 2021
- Just some brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.
The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. You could fill five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories in important events. Logic title developers operate at the demanding boundary of video game design, creating some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
