The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham extended their unbeaten run in away games in the Premier League and delivered the Toffees their first defeat at Hill Dickinson Stadium.

The Toffees were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having left their historic home behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Tottenham's leader the Dutchman pounced twice from set-pieces in the opening 45 minutes to put their impressive record at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender thought he had equalized the scores five minutes after the defender's opener, glancing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

The Portuguese striker, meanwhile, missed a number of chances, while the Italian goalkeeper made a succession of fine stops to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road without defeat in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee intervened, advising the match official to review the score on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in an illegal position and had impeded with the Spurs keeper.

The win moves the manager's side up to third in the division, five points off local foes and table-toppers Arsenal.

The Merseyside club stay 14th and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Tottenham analysis: Van de Ven fulfils duties at each end of the field

Following a uninspiring weekday display in the Champions League against Monaco, where they mustered a mere two shots on goal, Frank chose Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of ex-Everton forward the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to make much of an impact before being substituted for the substitute after an hour on the field, but it emerged he proved unnecessary in the end.

Centre-back the Dutchman transformed into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked set-piece play, with the midfielder heading the ball toward the six-yard box for an unmarked the defender to head home.

And the captain - stepping up as skipper in Cristian Romero's absence - added his second in added time as he rose above Jordan Pickford to head home.

Van de Ven was just as outstanding in defensive duties, partnering well with Kevin Danso as the duo dealt excellently with the numerous deliveries sent their way by Everton.

Everton analysis: Toffees missing striker's instinct

The club's recent stadium had been a happy hunting ground, but it seems the freshness may have worn off somewhat and fans headed to the gates after Sarr's third for Spurs.

The break in the team's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for the manager, but their attacking woes will be.

Beto and the other striker - the Toffees' pair of recognised strikers - had scored just one league goal between them before Sunday's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor record on a damp and dreary evening on Merseyside.

Beto's form was summed up when he chose to overhead kick a clear chance from close range, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have tested Vicario.

Barry, too, was unable to influence the game after coming on for the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. Most of Everton's attacks came through the winger and Ndiaye, who tirelessly delivered dangerous balls into the Tottenham box.

Everton: The team travel to Sunderland in the top flight on Monday, 3 November at 20:00 GMT.

Tottenham: The London club go to Newcastle's ground on late October for their fourth-round League Cup tie against the Magpies.
