Right-leaning reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been mixed, with certain backers of the former Trump administration highlighting the prominent presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in images, while others lamented how extensive redactions portray Donald Trump and Republicans in a unfavorable light.
Justice Department Justifies Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent exaggerated language. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so open with the public about such a delicate legal issue,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the redaction process.
Concerns Raised by Redactions
While the former president's name and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions raise significant questions about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased transparency.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” wrote Georgia Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
In a online statement, Republican Congressman Thomas Massie asserted the censorship break the statute, and implied that a subsequent Congress may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the letter of the act,” he continued.
A Faction of Rightwing Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, some conservative pundits and former President allies swung firmly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—originating from a DOJ run by key Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes scores of pages that are completely censored, and many of the individuals shown in pictures have their identities obscured.
But some do not, including prominent figures like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, especially, allowed certain conservative figures to go on the attack.
“This is pretty rich how the political left falsely claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Response
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing these files for an extended period only to dump them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality decades-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Not previously, not ever be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
However, broader comment on the political right was relatively muted after the disclosure, especially when juxtaposed against the loud calls for action that preceded the legislative vote to enact a law mandating the files' publication.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full disclosure. In February, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi specifically after a group of conservative influencers were provided physical binders of materials that contained little previously unseen data.
