The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws regulating US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in condemning the decision.

The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat inflammatory language and disinformation.
